Chapter 9 – Leon

He was getting into the very bad habit of not sleeping through the night. He was no stranger to sleep deprivation, of course, and more than capable of getting through his days on a pot of horribly strong black coffee and not much else … but it wasn’t sustainable, was it. Especially not if he didn’t want to be a cranky ball of repressed fury all day. Especially now that there was a pack of wolf cubs to deal with, as well as whatever the hell was going on between him and Giselle. Just what was going on with her? He’d expected her to take him aside, to interrogate him about what had happened, about how he felt and what they were going to do and all of that trite nonsense … wasn’t that what women usually did? He’d sidestepped more than a few tedious relationship conversations in his day.

But Giselle hadn’t even mentioned it. Just smiled at him and bid him goodnight. It had been all he could do to stop himself from charging at her, sweeping her into his arms, and making his feelings known the best way he knew how—physically. And now, downstairs in his office, pacing back and forth, he found himself wishing that she had pestered him with questions. Because now he was beginning to wonder if he’d made up the significance of what had happened between them. Maybe it was a dragon thing. Maybe they just—had sex and forgot about it. He was going to have to sit in a room and lay out everything in as orderly a manner as he could. God, he was going to have to call a meeting, wasn’t he? How awful. And at the same time … how exhilarating. And frightening. A lot more fear in him than he was willing to admit to, when he thought about coming clean with her, telling her how he felt.

The thing was, he didn’t really know how he felt. He’d spent so long wallowing in the negative emotions—in anger, in fear, in violence and self-preservation and the gut instinct that helped you dodge a punch then throw one back—that anything that actually felt good was like a foreign country. Not a language he spoke. Was it love, that he felt for her? Or lust? Or just simple infatuation, a little crush he’d developed on her because she was beautiful and kind and she’d deigned to have sex with him? That wasn’t fair though, was it? This was more than a crush. Much more. A crush wouldn’t have put the beast in him to sleep for nearly a full day. A crush wouldn’t have
